Minutes from The Special Meeting
Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 8:00-9:30 PM
Room 10
Present: Clay Hoener, Liz Anker, Erik Entwistle, Shizue Sano, Diane Frey (AFT Field Rep.), Jonathan Cohler, Adriana Ausch, Tom Enman, Eiko Ishizuka, Ginny Latts, Lisa Lederer, Ellie Perrone, Emily Romney, Marta Zurad, Yuan-Mei Xing
Clay Hoener called the meeting to order at 8:10pm.
President’s Report
Contract Proposals: LFU completed submitting its proposals on August 3, 2010.
They can be accessed via LFU web site. Click on each heading, and it will bring you to that particular proposal.
These are initial proposals.
NLRB’s filing of injunction
Hearing on the Complaint is scheduled for December 13, 2010.
A letter from a member of the Board of Visitors was introduced.
Appreciation of all members work toward the common goal.
Questions/Answers, and discussion on the proposals and NLRB related matters followed the President’s report.
Student assignment, faculty evaluation, benefit units calculation, maintaining high standards, accreditation for the Conservatory, and department chairs who are not familiar with the subject matters were among concerns that were voiced.
The Proposals aim to give the faculty voice and contract. Proposals themes are balance and transparency. On the economic side, it aims to restore what had been taken away from us all.
LFU has repeatedly warned the administration not to violate the labor law, and requested to negotiate.
Discussion about the NLRB filing of injunction petition
It is extremely rare that National NLRB authorizes a regional NLRB to file for injunction.
The rate of the actual filing is estimated as 1 in 1,000 cases nationwide.
Longy’s case is the only one in the Higher Education in last twenty years nationwide.
Update on the Scholarship Fund from Liz Anker
The Fund has over a thousand dollars now.
The contributions are coming from people outside of Longy, and LFU members as well.
It will be deposited in LFU’s bank account when it is established.
Treasurer’s Report
Shizue is working toward opening a bank account of LFU.
LFU is a non-profit labor organization, 501c(5).
The donation to LFU is unlikely to be tax-deductible due to the status of 501c(5).
The meeting was adjourned at 9:35pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Shizue Sano
LFU Treasurer
