January 8, 2010
To the Faculty of the Longy School of Music:
As one of the teachers involved in organizing our faculty union affiliated with New York State United Teachers, AFT/NEA last year, I am writing to salute your efforts to unionize at the Longy School of Music. We engaged in a nearly year-long struggle to dispel many of the rumors about unionization promoted by our School’s administration and to allay the fears of reprisals on the part of some of our colleagues. I am proud to report that on April 25, 2009 my colleagues and I voted overwhelmingly to unionize.
The anti-union myths you are probably hearing right now are part and parcel of management’s campaign to mislead or frighten you, and I urge you to think rationally about everything you can achieve as a unionized faculty. At Manhattan School of Music, we are now able to sit at the bargaining table with the administration as equals, discussing such issues as wages, benefits, and working conditions. The administration is obliged to negotiate with us over these and other matters in good faith, and provide us with all pertinent information we request.
Your administration may be warning you about the loss of flexibility a so-called “outside party” will bring to the Longy School of Music. I ask you to remember that you and your colleagues will form your own local union, and not some foreign entity. I also suggest you consider just who has had all the flexibility until now at Longy, and who has been getting “flexed.”
On behalf of my colleagues and me, we want you to know that we will be with you in spirit when you vote YES for union representation on January 20th, and wish you every success with this exciting endeavor.
In solidarity,
Adam Kent
Bargaining Committee Member
Piano Faculty, Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division
