Executive Board Meeting
Longy Faculty Union (LFU)
January 21, 2011
Present: Liz Anker, Deborah Beers (Debbie), Shizue Sano
This telephone meeting was called to order at 11:05 a.m. by Liz Anker. Members of the Negotiating Committee were in negotiations and not able to attend this meeting. This meeting was conducted by telephone because of inclement weather.
Minutes for the Special Meeting January 11, 201, were approved as amended. Minutes for the Executive Board Meeting January 11, 2011, were approved.
Liz gave the Vice President’s report, starting with the NLRB update. The trial is scheduled to start Feb. 7.
Liz continued with a negotiation update: very serious negotiations with administration are taking place full time this week and will continue into next week. We are cautiously hopeful a settlement may be reached, but we are also preparing for the trial.
Shizue gave the Treasurer’s report. Mrs. Hillyer was very grateful for the flowers sent by the Union. She would like to put a few lines of thanks in our newsletter. Shizue will speak with Mrs. Hillyer about this possibility. Liz announced she had received an additional contribution to the scholarship fund.
This writer gave the Communications Committee report. Plans for upcoming issues of the LFU News were discussed. The phone tree has been updated in draft form with help from a Union member. Suggestions were made about putting the phone tree into more user-friendly form. External communications were discussed. A to-do list to help make operations more efficient was discussed.
The possibility of a belated birthday party for the Union was discussed. Liz will check with a member about possibly hosting the party. The recital in Francie’s honor will be discussed in the Communications Committee.
Membership building was discussed. There will be a meeting on Monday of the Membership Committee. Now would be a good time to invite more people to join the Union because we have so much NLRB support.
There was discussion of a website that could help us organize volunteers. It was agreed it would be good to launch our use of the website with a small number of people.
The possibility of finding alternates to serve occasionally on the Negotiating Committee was discussed.
Shizue told of a packet she had received announcing possible insurance benefits that could be available with discounted prices to Union members. The people offering the benefits are willing to show up at a membership meeting. We may bring the subject up again at another meeting.
The need to establish a protocol on sending flowers was discussed. It was agreed that, now that a precedent has been established to send flowers on death of a faculty member, the practice should continue. Other important life transitions will be acknowledged with a card. People should be encouraged to let us know about their personal news so we can acknowledge it.
The next Executive Board meeting will be January 31, noon to 2. The meeting adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Deborah Yardley Beers
Secretary, Longy Faculty Union
