Executive Board Meeting
Longy Faculty Union (LFU)
February 18, 2011
Present: Liz Anker, Deborah Beers (Debbie), Jonathan Cohler, Erik Entwistle, Clay Hoener, Shizue Sano, Diane Frey (AFT Field Rep)
The meeting was called to order at 10:15 a.m.
Clay gave the President’s report regarding the status of the hearing about the unfair labor practices, which was scheduled to start on February 7. Clay said that Judge Rubin had gone on record for a few minutes on Thursday, and had otherwise kept off record. On Friday a week ago at about 4 a.m. a tentative agreement on a contract was reached with the administration. Since then the Negotiating Committee has been trying to work out details of a settlement with the administration. A summary of the tentative contract was passed out and briefly discussed.
Tentative dates for future meetings were scheduled as follows:
Wednesday, March 2: 8:00 p.m., Executive Board; 8:15 p.m., Special Meeting, open to Collective Bargaining Unit (CBU) members
Friday, March 4: 10 a.m., Executive Board; 10:15 to 11:30 a.m., Special Meeting, open to CBU members
Sunday, March 6: 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., Executive Board; 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Membership Meeting, open to all who are LFU members as of the beginning of the meeting.
These dates will be confirmed if a timely agreement on details of the global settlement is reached with the administration and Bard College. A summary of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) will then be given in writing to members of the CBU in accordance with our Constitution; the agreement will be discussed at the Special Meetings and voted on by secret ballot in the Membership Meeting on March 6.
Shizue gave the Treasurer’s report. She said that we have 2 new members. She will be working on filing for Chapter status. We will need a tax ID number. A lengthy discussion followed about dues. Points mentioned in this discussion included the importance of considering fairness to faculty members who are working less than full time as well as the importance of the Chapter’s having enough resources to pay dues to state and national AFT given the flexible nature of employment hours at Longy. Dues will be discussed at a Special Meeting.
Discussion with members about some changes needed in our Constitution will be postponed to later Membership Meetings.
The meeting adjourned at 12:15 pm.
Respectfully submitted.
