Below is an excerpt of a recent letter of March 19, 2010, sent to the American Federation of Teachers MA from Mintz Levin, the law firm representing the school. It sheds some light on the dramatic changes taking place for the faculty at Longy School of Music.
"... The basis for realigning the faculty to support the future needs of Longy's programs was the implementation of Longy's strategic plan, which has been underway for well over 12 months. This strategic plan includes, but is not limited to, the anticipated merger with another institution of higher education. The realignment was effectuated by either divisionally reassigning faculty based on teaching activity, or by not renewing faculty members' contracts. In sum, these changes impacted the faculty as follows: (a) 9 faculty members were assigned exclusively to the Community Programs; (b) 46 faculty members were assigned exclusively to the Conservatory; (c) 31 faculty members' contracts were not renewed; (d) 6 faculty members were granted Emeritus status; and (e) 87 faculty members experienced no change in their status..."
