Executive Board Meeting
Longy Faculty Union (LFU)
January 5, 2011
Present: Clay Hoener, Deborah Beers (Debbie), Erik Entwistle, Jonathan Cohler, Liz Anker, Shizue Sano, AFT Field Rep., Diane Frey
The meeting was called to order at 10:20 a.m. Clay opened the meeting with thanks and reflections on our interesting journey. Minutes for the Nov. 30 Executive Board meeting were read and approved.
Jonathan gave a brief report on the injunction order issued by Judge Saris. The order calls for the School to reinstate the 8 CBU members who were dismissed and to restore their pay for work they missed. The order also calls for the school to negotiate over the effects of the “realignment”. Appreciation was expressed for the injunction decision. External and internal communications about the order were briefly discussed. Questions are being collected about Judge Saris’ decision. These questions will be discussed with the NLRB. The reasoning behind the order was discussed. Concern was expressed for members of the faculty who are not members of the CBU.
The Board members present signed the LFU Constitution, which was ratified Feb. 28, 2010.
It was decided to try out having the LFU News serve as the home page of our website.
It was announced that AFT lawyer Haidee will be present at the Special Meeting on the 11th. This meeting will be open to all faculty in the CBU. Liz will chair the meeting, since Clay will have to be absent. The Board’s job at the meeting will be primarily to listen to concerns of faculty. There will also be virtual “office hours” established when people can phone in questions to Board members outside the official meeting time.
Shizue gave the Treasurer’s report. We have lost two members (one death, one resignation from the School), but are regaining 8 members through Judge Saris’ order. There was also some discussion of a bank the LFU could potentially use for its account.
This writer gave the report for the Communications Committee. Our basic PR message for the present was established in the recent Communications Committee meeting December 5. The possibility of co-sponsoring a recital for Francie Fitch is being investigated. Jonathan has upgraded our electronic communications with Facebook and Twitter. He has given a new look to the LFU News, and has also connected these different means of communications electronically. It should be easier to get our message out now. A protocol for prior approval of messages on Twitter and Facebook was established. It was agreed that the number of people generating possible outgoing messages will be expanded. This writer will gradually invite some people to help in this effort. Future possible profiles of people affected by the “realignment” were discussed.
Future issues of the LFU News were discussed, including an anniversary issue celebrating our first official year as the LFU. Diane said that an upcoming issue of the AFT Spotlight will feature the LFU as well. Clay invited us to come up with ideas for an anniversary party.
Liz reported briefly on the Membership Committee, which is now comprised of 3 members. The Membership Committee is working on helping members find appropriate ways to help the Union.
The meeting adjourned at 12:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Deborah Yardley Beers
LFU Secretary
