Longy Faculty Union Membership Meeting
September 14, 2010
Present: 14 LFU members, and LFU Field Representative, Diane Frey
LFU President Clay Hoener called the meeting to order at 10:20 a.m.
Clay Hoener, as President, commented on the importance of meeting together as a Union.
Shizue Sano, as Treasurer, reported that membership is growing and is expected to grow still more. After July 1 more people became eligible to join the Union. Shizue is still working on getting Chapter status for us so that we can get some additional benefits for being members. There was discussion of eligibility requirements for joining the Union. It was mentioned that this information is on our website and also in our Constitution.
This writer reported for the Communication Committee about the profiles in the Longy Faculty News. Issues of the News can be forwarded to interested friends and colleagues. It is important for us to talk about the Union in our conversations with our colleagues. The virtual "office hours" were mentioned as good times to reach members of the Board without playing phone tag. People were invited to let the Board know if they can help out with Union activities more. A request was made to have Union meetings announced more in advance, and efforts will he made to do so if possible.
Clay Hoener gave an update on the Negotiating Committee. The Committee has presented more than 40 complete proposals to the administration ranging from a half page to 4 to 5 pages each. A great deal of meeting time with the administration so far has been spent in explaining the proposals offered. The Committee has received less than one page back from the administration, and no actual proposals. There is another meeting scheduled for Friday.
Diane Frey reported that the Negotiating Committee has looked hard for ways to make things better for the School without costing the School extra money. The Committee has been working with a positive attitude, and has respected the authority of the administration in negotiations. Proposals submitted have been drawn from contracts from Berklee, Bard, Cambridge College, as well as our own Longy Faculty Handbook and ideas garnered from our Membership and Special Meetings.
The filing of charges with the NLRB was discussed. A large number of documents from the LFU have been given to the NLRB. Anyone with recent related incidents should report such incidents to Clay.
Also discussed were teacher assignments, support from the outside community, and the recent meeting held with Bard President Botstein and LFU representatives.
The meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Deborah Yardley Beers
Secretary
