About the LFU

The Longy Faculty Union (LFU) was established in 2010 as a natural outgrowth of the evolving relationship between the faculty and administration of the Longy School of Music, a graduate-level conservatory located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its formation followed earlier efforts to formalize institutional policies, including the creation of the Faculty Handbook, which laid out shared guidelines for evaluation and promotion. The LFU is Local 6484 of AFT Massachusetts, a state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, and is proud to be part of the Greater Boston Labor Council.

Today, the LFU supports faculty in fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for students, advocating for fair and transparent processes in hiring and teaching assignments, and working collaboratively with the administration to negotiate contracts and strengthen the Longy community. Together, we are committed to advancing Longy’s mission of making a meaningful difference in the world through music.
